Emission Sources
The University of British Columbia produces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through various activities, from building energy consumption to the embodied energy in the supply chain. (Embodied energy is the energy required to manufacture, and supply to the point of use, a product, material or service).
In 2006, UBC struck a technical advisory committee, chaired by Professor James Tansey, to measure UBC’s GHG emissions. The inventory report used the World Resources Institute Greenhouse Gas Protocol to measure emissions. The report measures Scope 1 and 2 operational emissions on both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses.
Recognizing that UBC has an opportunity to reduce emissions in many areas beyond operations, the 2006 inventory report also measured several Scope 3 emissions. These include embodied energy in buildings, faculty and staff air travel, daily commuting to and from campus, waste, fertilizer and paper procurement.
