Process
The Climate Action Plan is being developed through the collective efforts of many.
The Operations Working Group (OWG), a multi stakeholder working group of the President’s Advisory Council- Sustainability (PAC-S), is overseeing the climate action planning process. This working group, chaired by Charlene Easton, will pass on recommendations from the planning process to the President’s Advisory Council-Sustainability.
A technical advisory committee, composed of student, staff and faculty representation, developed the 2006 GHG Emissions Inventory Report. This committee, chaired by James Tansey, is providing technical review and support of the planning process.
Seven working groups, corresponding to emissions sources on campus, have been struck to develop emissions specific reduction and climate action plans. These working groups include members from UBC’s staff and academic communities.
A climate adaptation task force, chaired by Stewart Cohen, is studying the projected climate-related impacts on the Vancouver campus and infrastructure. This committee includes student, staff and faculty representation.
Interested members of the campus community are participating in a variety of events throughout the climate action planning process, to learn and give to their input to the plan. These events include a roundtable discussion series that was held in 2008, the Climate Action Symposium, and the Climate Action visioning process. Process
The development process for the UBC Climate Action Plan will unfold in three phases between March and June 2009. Each year, we will review the climate action plan to add more emissions sources and climate actions.
Phase 1: Climate Action Vision
Phase 2: Emissions Source Working Groups
Phase 3: Draft Climate Action Plan
Phase 1: Climate Action Vision
The vision will be created by you – the UBC campus community – through two workshops to be held in March 2009. For more information about the Climate Action Vision workshops click here.
Phase 2: Emissions Source Working Groups
Seven areas have been identified as the key sources of UBC’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Working groups in each of these seven areas will consist of UBC operational and administrative staff, and faculty. Each working group will meet three times between late March and early May 2009, in order to:
- review/establish GHG inventory for the emissions source area
- brainstorm and prioritize climate strategies for the emissions source area
- discuss implementation strategies and monitoring requirements
- prepare a draft climate action plan for the emissions source area
- establish management system requirements
During this phase of the process, the UBC campus community will be asked to answer key questions that will help inform the tasks of the seven working groups. These questions will be posted on the feedback page, with alerts sent out through the UBC Climate Action Plan distribution list. In the future, subsequent revisions of the Climate Action Plan will address further emissions sources.
Phase 3: Draft Climate Action Plan
The seven emissions source action strategies will be rolled up to form the draft UBC Climate Action Plan. In June 2009, the draft UBC Climate Action Plan will be posted online. The campus community will be invited to attend an Open House to provide discussion and feedback on the plan, and to confirm that the plan puts UBC on the path set out by the community at the visioning workshops. The final Climate Action Plan will be presented to the community in the fall of 2009.
